Great MisAdventures Summer 2011

Yellowstone National Park ~ Upper Loop

July 29, 2011

Mammoth Hot Springs Terrace

July has been a very hectic and busy month at the RV park in West Yellowstone. We are tired and worn out, so another drive around the park seems to be the order of the day. Today we turned left at Madison Junction and headed to Mammoth Hot Springs. We stopped at the Mammoth visitors center and viewed the exhibits, then headed east toward Tower Junction.

Noticing that Blacktail Plateau Drive was open for travel, we venture off the pavement onto a dusty drive across the mountain. Blacktail Plateau Drive is a one way stretch of dirt road that runs somewhat parallel to the Grand Loop Road between Mammoth and Tower Junction. This scenic byway takes you through rolling hills covered in wildflowers. We also hoped to come across animals off the beaten path, but they hid from our sights today. Looking across the valley, we can see for miles and miles.

Last time we drove this route, we saw plenty of wildlife. So far today we are not seeing the wild animals of YNP. Lots of wildflowers and beautiful scenery, but no beasts today.

The Mighty 350 travels over Dunraven Pass and arrives once again at the north rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Wind greets us as we walk a short distance to view the Lower Falls from yet another viewpoint.

Leaving JoEllen at the truck, David hikes along the north rim to view Silver Cord Cascade. This 800 foot waterfall is in a crevice partially hidden from view except from directly across the canyon.

The Mammoth "pet elk" were out in force today, lazing about the entrance to the clinic and other buildings in the area. Park Rangers had lots of orange cones blocking access to the sidewalks in the area. Young bulls, mother cows with their calves all enjoying a fine Yellowstone morning.
