Great MisAdventures in Quartzsite, AZ ~ Season VI ~

Quartzsite, Arizona

December 28 through March 19, 2011

The Sonoran Desert
Our 6th winter in Quartzsite

At home in the Sonoran Desert.

We arrived in Quartzsite this season on December 28th, leaving The Mall at Sierra Vista parking lot behind in our rearview mirror. What a change in environment; dark skies, starry starry nights, incredible sunrises and sunsets, and quiet. Living on a mall, working 12+ hours per day selling trees takes a lot out of one and only makes us appreciate the Sonoran Desert even more.

We ventured a short distance south of where we parked last year, finding a great spot. The big RV and rock show brought lots of visitors to the desert crowding us a little. We had 60-70 RV's park just to our west encroaching upon our desert driveway. After a couple of weeks of noisy neighbors, the desert settled down with everyone going back to their life, leaving us once again surrounded by empty desert views and quite, starry nights.

As we listen to the news and hear of the cold and snow across the country, we are grateful that we can call this desert home for a couple of months. Weather has been mostly wonderful, with highs in the 70's and no rain so far. The wind caused some minor trouble with the satellite dishes as the storm fronts moved through, but the birds water dish only partially froze a couple of nights.

Marcus Visit

January 13-18, 2011

Our youngest came for a short visit once again. Last year he blessed us with two visits, this year we timed his visit for the January Super Coin Hunt put on by the Quartzsite Metal Detecting Club. On Saturday, Marc and David hoisted detectors of metal and proceeded to scour 12 acres for the chance of finding over 22 thousand coins, some marked with numbers to claim prizes gifted by local business and Club members. Marcus found 2 marked tokens, winning a neat Swiss Army knife equipped with even a miniature flashlight and also coin hunting kit. Our friend, Bill Stover, had lent Marc a new Tesoro Lobo detector to use during the hunt. He also stated at the time that token #87 was for a knife he donated and had second thoughts wishing for its return. Unbelievably, Marc found this token and Bill received his knife in return for the loan of the machine.

We also went out the the Middle Camp gold claim and dug some dirt finding a little bit of the yellow metal as well as taking an overnight trip to Laughlin, Nevada for some great prime rib, In-n-Out burgers, and a little bit of gaming.
